SurfingThe summer is officially here, the sun is finally shining and we are all getting ready for a summer of fun with all the family. North Wales always has so much to offer when it comes to events local to wherever you may be, but also introduces fantastic new opportunities for us to all enjoy.

Surf Snowdonia is just one example and this will be opening on August 1st 2015 in Dolgarrog, Conwy. Snowdonia itself is the perfect place to practice plenty of outdoor activities and extreme sports, whether it’s rock climbing, kayaking, caving, gorge walking, mountain biking or countless others.

However, Surf Snowdonia is offering something new and even more extreme than the other; Europe’s first wave garden. This is a lozenge-shaped fresh-water lagoon that is approximately the size of six football pitches, set within the Conwy Valley in the Snowdonia Mountains.

To make things more interesting, a two metre high barrelling wave will start at the centre of the lagoon, which peels perfectly for more than 150 metres. A disused factory in Dolgarrog has been given a second wind of life, renovated and converted into to a huge wave producing surf pool. This means there will be constant perfect waves that can be surfed inland no matter what the weather conditions are like.

Although Wales already has some popular surfing spots on Anglesey and Abersoch, this new attraction provides beginners with a safe, enclosed place in which they can surf, as well as providing good practice for seasoned surfers living in the area after their surfing fix.

Local surf enthusiasts, first timers and university’s surf clubs around the area will also be able to make trips to this garden, rather than having to make a trip down to Newquay or abroad in order to get decent surf.

This installation is one of few wave gardens due to be constructed across the UK and is bound to draw surfers from all over to enjoy some freshly created waves. To make this a memorable summer, make sure you mark August 1st 2015 on your calendar as ‘Surf’s Up’.

With many across the country expected to be booking their day on the waves for this summer, it is often best to book early but also arrange your accommodation for an overnight stay. Surf Snowdonia offer onsite wooden camping pods, but if you wish to stay elsewhere to explore the area a little more, we can suggest Black Boy Inn.

They are a bed and breakfast in Caernarfon, which is a reasonable 45 minute drive away. They offer fantastic food, beautiful accommodation, but also a brilliant location. With Caernarfon Castle just around the corner, as well as the great town itself, they are the ideal place to wind down after a eventful day of surfing and enjoy a lovely meal and recuperate.
