Dydd Gwyl Dewi Hapus! It’s St David’s Day, that magical day every year where we celebrate all things, Welsh. Now you may be wondering how on earth you might be able to experience this Welsh holiday, we have therefore decided to put together this list of ways you might celebrate it properly!
First things first – who is St David?
St. David is one of the greatest figures in Wales of the 6th Century! He contributed to founding a lot of religious communities and is the only native-born patron saint of the home nations of Great Britain or Ireland. St David died on the 1st of March in the year 589, but it wasn’t until the 12th Century, he was canonized by Pope Callixtus. Ever since we have celebrated St David’s day. This is how you can join in on celebrating this momentous day.
Small acts of kindness – ‘Do the little things’ or ‘gwnewch y pethau bychain’. Random acts of kindness are without a doubt the best way of celebrating in the true spirit.
Visit a castle
There are so many castles in North Wales – did you know that Wales has more castles per square mile than any other nation in the world – wow! This includes big hitters like UNESCO World Heritage Site awarded sites like Beaumaris, Caernarfon, Conwy and even Harlech – or go to the genuine Welsh held castles like Dolbadarn and Dolwyddelan which were built by the native princes of the Welsh hinterland.
If you want to get a closer look at some of these iconic Welsh sites then we have got you covered. To celebrate St David’s Day, Cadw is offering some free entry to many of these locations, so you will have a much easier time storming the ramparts than invaders might have had in the past.
The National Trust is also a reliable source of welsh heritage and culture, thanks to the stately homes and buildings of national importance which have been impeccably maintained, and contain a lot of fantastic daffodils which are ideal for celebrating this important day of the year.

If nothing else, grab yourself a bunch of daffodils from the supermarket and pop them in a vase on your table to celebrate the brilliance of St David’s Day. They can sit on your kitchen table or windowsill as you munch on your food or listen to fab Welsh artists like Manic Street Preachers or Tom Jones.
