North Wales’ recent construction expansions and builds continue to impress after the opening of a multi-million pound pedestrian and cycle bridge in late October – making it even easier to travel to your bed and breakfast Conwy accommodation.
As part of a wonderful £10 million scheme to revitalise some area’s degradation over the years, this is fantastic news for the future of travel in North Wales and with ‘Pont Y Ddraig’ exceeding 80 metres in length, staying fit just became a lot easier.
Thanks to superb funding from Denbighshire Council and other parties, the ambitious project is finally completed. Rather than just being a simple bridge, the organisers have gone all out to raise the profile of the area and to deliver one of the best walking and cycling zones you’ll find anywhere in the country.
Adding to the much-delayed bridge is the construction along the harbour of some brilliant facilities such as a café, public toilets, an office and a meeting room which will bring much of the aplomb back to the somewhat neglected area.
All things nautical are catered for after the recent renovations which will see more boats being able to be moored in the Rhyl harbour with lots of functionality to any budding sea captain.
This was more than enough incentive to lure a Paralympian to do the honours of the grand unveil. Mark Colbourne, the beloved athlete who cycled to Gold medal glory at London 2012, was beaming as he rode his bike over the bridge for the first time.
One of the people responsible for its success, Jane Lorimer, had this to say on the subject:
“Pont y Ddraig is a fantastic example of a route that will make walking and cycling the best option for everyday journeys and will provide a direct link between communities in the Rhyl area.”
If you get the chance, make sure you cycle or walk over this amazing bridge in the heart of Clwyd Estuary.
