Caernarfon Castle is a fortress. The muscular, intimidating castle would have been scary to attack against and nowadays makes for a breath-taking and interesting day out. King Edward I has created what is one of the most impressive and spectacular castles that Wales has to offer – and you are allowed to visit. Constructed in 1283, the castle was not only set up as a stronghold of battle, but as a seat of government and royal peace.
Most castles will be seen with rounded towers, but not Caernarfon. The towers were designed to be visually interesting, along with offering practical options of flanking, deployment and use of hidden battlements on top of the towers and walls. The castles architecture was partially influenced by a desire to make the structure visually impressive, to symbolise the new English presence within Wales. The Castles structure was dictated by the way that the land lay, giving it a large area on the edge of the coast, where previously a motte-and-bailey castle lay.
