North Wales is a fantastic destination for cyclists thanks to the areas amazing range of landscape that allows riders to enjoy a few hours pedalling across the glorious area. You can cycle almost anywhere you like whilst in North Wales, but those looking for the best spots to cycle or mountain bike will find this guide extremely useful!
In this article we will be enlightening you on the different cycling and mountain biking areas that are available for use by absolutely anyone. Whilst some may be more suited to advanced riders, there is certainly something for everyone, no matter the level of experience, confidence or age.
Coed Y Brennin
Considered to be one of the best mountain biking centres in the region, Coed Y Brennin boasts fantastic trails that go by the names of “Beast of Brennin”, “Dragons Back” and “Minour Tour”. Each of the trails are colour coded according to the difficulty rating, meaning you can match your ability to the trail that suits you. All trails start and finish from a new eco visitor centre just south of Trawsfynydd on the A470. A fantastic café and fantastic range of biking facilities and services mean that there is everything you could need whilst you enjoy riding the exceptional routes.
Mawddach Trail
The Mawddach Trail is another fantastic mountain biking facility that runs along a disused railway track, following the River Mawddach. Known to be an extremely enjoyable and scenic route, the views that are seen attract thousands of riders every year. The cycle path is well marked and maintained, with places to get refreshments along the way. Those who fancy a bite to eat can stop off at the George III for a bite to eat. Antur Stiniog
This mountain biking trail is the perfect opportunity for those riders who’d like a challenge for themselves and their bikes to get stuck in. Not for the faint hearted, Antur Stiniog boasts some exceptional downhill trails that offer an extremely unique adrenalin rush. You can be whipped up to the top of the mountain on the mini bus, meaning you can focus on the adrenalin rush and the downhill thrills that you came for, rather than pushing your bike up the hill. Located in Blaenau Ffestiniog, you couldn’t ask for a better mountain biking track in North Wales.
Lon Las Cymru
Also known as ‘National Cycle Route 8’, this route runs all the way from Holyhead to Cardiff. This route is 250 miles in length – but don’t worry, you won’t have to cycle all of it. Exceptional scenery being seen throughout the route means no matter where you start and finish, you’re sure to have an enjoyable ride. A range of terrains and routes mean that there is something to test and cater for everyone, so whether you’re after a long day out or just a few hours, you can do it on this route. If you were to do the entire route, you’d probably need 5 to 7 days!
Betws Y Coed
Betws Y Coed is known to be a fantastic tourist attraction due to its amazing scenery and range of attractions. Located in the area is the Marin Trail, a famous biking track that combines forest roads with superb single tracks, providing an exciting, exhilarating and beautiful ride across the Snowdonia National Park. You can join the Marin Trail at Betws Y Coed, where you’ll also find plenty of places to get a drink or bite to eat, with restaurants, cafes and shops all being at your fingertips.
